In October 1996, a Japanese card game called the Expansion Pack — known outside Japan as the Base Set — launched in hobby stores across Japan. To mark the anniversary, The Pokémon Company is doing something it has never done before: releasing a single set simultaneously across every market in the world, on the exact same day. No Japan-first head start. South Africa gets this one at the same moment as Tokyo, New York, and everywhere else.

Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration launches globally on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with additional products arriving in multiple waves. For South African collectors, pre-orders are now live until July 30, 2026, giving collectors the opportunity to secure products before their respective Wave 1, Wave 1.5, Wave 2 and Wave 2.5 releases.

The set is expected to run to roughly 150 cards after secret rares, and it sits entirely outside the standard Mega Evolution expansion block as a standalone commemorative release — the same treatment the 25th Anniversary Celebrations set got in 2021, just bigger.

Phase 2: What's Inside Every Pack

A 30th Celebration booster pack breaks from the usual formula in one clear way: every card is foil, with no non-foil pulls at any rarity.

Six Cards Per Pack — All Foil

Each pack contains six cards total: five foil cards plus one foil Basic Energy card. Both the numbered cards and the Energy carry a holofoil finish — there's no non-foil filler anywhere in the pack. English packs also include a Pokémon TCG Live digital code card, as is standard for special sets.

One of the five foil cards in every pack is always a Pikachu. There are 30 different Pikachu variants in the set — one for each year of the TCG's existence — each illustrated by a different artist and individually numbered so collectors can track which of the 30 they've pulled.

It's the same idea that made 2021's Gold Shiny Mew such a strong emotional anchor for Celebrations — a guaranteed feel-good pull in every pack — except here it's spread across 30 different cards instead of one, giving the format its own "gotta catch 'em all" mini-game inside the main set.

Phase 3: Futuristic Rare — The New Chase Rarity

The biggest structural announcement for 30th Celebration is a completely new card rarity. When The Pokémon Company teased the set on Pokémon Day in February 2026, fans immediately noticed the opalescent sheen on the Mew and Mewtwo artwork in the trailer. The answer was confirmed on June 1, 2026: it's called Futuristic Rare.

Futuristic Rares are illustrated by YOSHIROTTEN, a Tokyo-based graphic artist and art director known for vibrant, high-contrast digital work. The Pokémon Company describes each Futuristic Rare as depicting Pokémon in "striking artwork evocative of hope toward an unknown future."

What We Know About the Futuristic Rare Rarity

Officially confirmed Futuristic Rares include Mewtwo ex and Mew ex in the main booster set, appearing in both daytime and nighttime-themed art. Two further Futuristic Rares — Pikachu ex in day and night versions — are confirmed as exclusives to the Ultra-Premium Collections releasing November 6. The finish is opalescent and pearlescent, distinct from both Special Illustration Rares and existing gold hyper-rare treatments.

Phase 4: The Classic Collection — 30 Reprints

Just as the 25th Anniversary Celebrations set (2021) included a Classic Collection of 25 reprinted cards, 30th Celebration contains 30 Classic Collection reprints spanning the game's full 30-year history. Each carries a special "30" Pikachu stamp and a premium holofoil treatment not found on the original printings.

Community reaction so far has been mixed but broadly positive. "Crystal" Lugia and Shining Celebi alongside the obligatory Base Set Charizard is a strong lineup for veteran collectors, and the set favours competitive-format staples (Uxie, Sneasel, Delcatty) over pure showpieces — a broader, more player-shaped selection than the chase-heavy Classic Collection in Celebrations. The Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration product range is being released in multiple waves. For South African collectors, the most important detail is which wave each product belongs to and when that product is scheduled to launch.

Wave 1.5 expands the product range with products aimed at collectors who want more booster packs, collectible storage and smaller-format sealed products.

We've historically sat at the end of the supply chain — products released overseas would filter through to local shelves months later, and Japanese boxes sometimes reached collectors via grey-market importers before official channels had stock. The 30th Celebration simultaneous launch closes that gap for the first time.

The Pricing Reality in ZAR

South African collectors deal with a pricing reality every international guide skips: the ZAR/USD exchange rate. At roughly R16.40–R16.70 per US dollar at time of writing, a US retail price doesn't convert cleanly into an accessible local shelf price once freight, duties, and local margin are added. What Happened With Celebrations (2021)?

Celebrations launched in October 2021 with an ETB retailing at $49.99 USD. Sealed product appreciated well above retail in the years since, and the set's Classic Collection reprint of Base Set Charizard — even as a modern reprint — carries meaningful secondary-market value to this day. The set's chase card, a Gold Shiny Mew, has remained a sought-after pull years after release.

Where 30th Celebration Is Different

The Pokémon TCG Pocket mobile game has introduced a large new generation of collectors to the hobby since 2021, many of whom have never held a physical card.
