Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration: The Complete South African Guide
The first Pokémon TCG set to launch on the same day worldwide. Here's what's in the 199-card set, the new Futuristic Rares, the Classic Collection, and every product release date for South Africa.
In October 1996, a card game launched in Japanese hobby stores. Thirty years later, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is one of the biggest entertainment franchises on the planet – and to mark the anniversary, The Pokémon Company did something it had never done before. Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration launched on 16 September 2026 in every region at once. No Japan-first head start: South Africa opened packs on the same day as Tokyo and New York.

Phase 1
A set that broke 30 years of tradition
Since 1996 the Pokémon TCG followed one rule: Japan gets everything first, and English sets follow months later. 30th Celebration broke that rule. On 16 September 2026, Japan, North America, Europe and South Africa all released the same set on the same day.

Six foil cards – and a guaranteed Pikachu
Every pack contains five foil cards plus one foil Basic Energy, along with a Pokémon TCG Live code card. One of the five is always a Pikachu, from 30 different Pikachu cards – one for each year of the game, each by a different artist.
Phase 3
Futuristic Rares and the RGB Mews
30th Celebration debuted a brand-new rarity: Futuristic Rare. There are two – Mewtwo ex and Mew ex – illustrated by Tokyo-based artist YOSHIROTTEN with a vivid, opalescent finish unlike any previous rarity.
Alongside them sit three secret rares collectors are calling the RGB Mews: three Mew secret rares labelled R, G and B. Together with the Futuristic Rares, they're the set's top chase cards.

The Classic Collection
Like 2021's Celebrations, the set includes a Classic Collection: 30 reprints of famous cards from across the game's history, each with a special 30th anniversary stamp. Highlights include:
- Base Set Charizard and Base Set Pikachu – where it all began
- "Crystal" Lugia and Shining Celebi – e-Card and Neo era fan favourites
- Gengar Prime, Palkia LV.X and Darkrai & Cresselia LEGEND – Diamond & Pearl and HeartGold & SoulSilver icons
- N, Rayquaza-EX and M Gardevoir-EX – Black & White and XY classics
- Pikachu & Zekrom-GX, Mew VMAX, Zacian V and Arceus VSTAR – modern-era staples

Phase 6
South African prices and availability
The Pokémon TCG is distributed in South Africa by Solarpop, which allocates stock to official retailers including Rocket Grunt TCG. For the first time, South African collectors got a set on exactly the same day as the rest of the world instead of waiting through a lag.

Celebrations (2021) vs 30th Celebration (2026)
2021's Celebrations set for the 25th anniversary is the obvious comparison. Its sealed product has traded well above retail ever since, and the Classic Collection reprint of Base Set Charizard and the Gold Mew remain sought after.
